When my daughter was 8 years old, we worked together to make a Magic 8-Ball pumpkin. We knew we wanted the pumpkin to be functional, but it took us a while to figure out what materials we could use that would allow it to actually work.

We started with a white pumpkin, painted it black, and then filled a balloon with glycerin. Inside the balloon was a foam square on which we wrote brief fortunes on all sides. Just shake the pumpkin, and a new fortune floats to the top.

The answer to the question we asked for this photo was, “Perhaps.”
